Principles of Art: pattern
Observation & description using art vocabulary
Use beginning drawing and painting techniques

Color Mix-Up
After hearing the story “Mouse Paint”, students will learn the primary and secondary colors by mixing paints in an abstract composition. We’ll also conduct a science experiment and follow color recipes. 1 session.
Map of My Face
I’ll share the book “My Map Book” where we’ll discover that almost anything can have a map! Then, I’ll instruct students on making a map of their own face using labels then adding watercolor washes. 1 session.
Everyday Objects
Using observation and analogy, students will name and draw everyday objects such as scissors, forks or a toothbrush. We’ll look at examples of art that depict everyday objects. The student’s drawings can be bound into a book for your classroom.* 1 session.
Our Counting Book
First, we’ll look at the classic “Anno’s Counting Book” noting its detailed illustrations. Then we’ll make a counting book of our own. Each student will illustrate a different number and write the text. The drawings can be bound into a class book.* 1 session.
Fruit Print Fun
Using real fruits and vegetables, we’ll make colorful prints using tempera paint. We’ll analyze our work, looking for patterns, shapes and colors. Students will also discuss the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables and maybe even taste some! 1 session.
Sea Life Collage
After viewing a book and pictures about sea life, students will create a colorful underwater picture using cut paper shapes and tissue paper. We’ll discuss ocean habitats while classifying different types of sea life. 2 sessions.
Seasons Change
Four seasons, four works of art based on four classic stories: Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf (fall), Snowy Day (winter), The Very Hungry Caterpillar (spring) and Tar Beach (summer). 4 sessions.
Simple Still Life
Based on close observation of a variety of fruits or vegetables, students will create a simple still life painting. We’ll also examine and discuss works of art in which fruit is the subject. 1 session.
Animal Farm
Students participate in a shared writing activity to make up a fictional farm story using basic story elements (character, setting, problem/solution). The story is “written” with artwork. I’ll show students how to draw cows and other animals on the farm using geometric shapes. 1 session.
Our Neighborhood Landscape
Students will learn about different types of lines (thin, wide, wavy, straight, horizontal, vertical, etc.) and what makes a landscape painting. Then, we'll observe the landscape around us and create a painting based on what we see using a variety of lines. This lesson connects to science standard 4a: Draw pictures that portray some features of the thing being described. 1 session.
