Yokut Creation Myth
Students will read and interpret a local Native American myth about the creation of California’s geography. Students will illustrate the story using water soluble pastels. 2 sessions. 
Simple Weaving
We’ll look at the basic techniques of basket weaving used by Native Americans in our area, then we’ll make a basket using yarn, and/or a mat made from natural grasses. We’ll listen to native American stories while students weave. 2 sessions for one project, 4 sessions to make both.
Animal Totem Necklace
Students will create a small, polymer clay animal totem necklace, a Native American tradition of recognizing the qualities of different animals within ourselves. We’ll look at some examples and information about this tradition. 2 sessions.
Stanislaus Waterways
We’ll study the county’s natural water features in a multi-media presentation, then write a poem and paint a picture of what water means to us. 2 sessions.
Story Quilts
Based on a story by Faith Ringgold, “How the World Became Color-blind,” each student will receive a part of the story to illustrate and the “quilt” will be assembled for your class to enjoy. 2 sessions.
Amazing Animal Poster
Students will research an animal using a variety of resources, then design a poster about their topic. The poster will include written information as well as a painting or drawing of their animal. They will learn basic graphic design skills and typography as well as tricks for drawing animals. 3 sessions.
Nature Journaling
First students create a handmade journal and look at artist/naturalists who kept journals (John James Audubon, among others). Students will observe with a scientific eye and record observations through pictures and words. We’ll brainstorm places they can see nature in their neighborhood so they can keep a journal of observations over time. 2 sessions. 
Life in the Rainforest
This class will introduce the animals and plants living in the four layers of the rainforest. Simple shapes are the used for creating the each picture using watercolor with a crayon resist. Pictures may include birds, mammals, insects, flowers, fungus - your choice! 4 sessions.
