Principles of Art: balance
Observation & description using appropriate vocabulary

Cathedral Rose Window
Using radial balance, we’ll create a “stained glass” rose window in the style of the Gothic cathedral. After looking at some examples of rose windows, students will cut a frame, then use colored cellophane or tissue paper to add “glass.” 1 session.
Illuminated Poetry
Students will write a short poem, then illustrate it in the style of a medieval manuscript. The poem will be written with pen and ink calligraphy, then a decorative border will be added to illustrate the story. 2 sessions.
Presidential Portraits
Learn about the official presidential portraits -- who created them and where they are displayed. Then, pick a president and paint your own. We’ll cover body and facial proportions as we work, as well as shading techniques. 2 sessions.
Holocaust Literature & Art
Students will read excerpts from a number of texts, then examine the artwork and poetry that was produced in ghettos and concentration camps during World War II. Students will participate in “The Butterfly Project” by creating a butterfly artwork to be sent to the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas. 2 sessions.
Street Art: Is It?
Students do persuasive timed writing on whether graffiti is vandalism or art. Then, they will create a class mural about their neighborhood and culture. 3 sessions.
Modern Media
TV, computers and other advertising are the most ubiquitous forms of art in our society. Students will look at the methods behind the creation of advertising. Students will learn about persuasive techniques of graphic arts and create their own ad campaign. 3 sessions.
Women in Art
A look at the history of art from a woman’s perspective. Then, pick your favorite woman artist and emulate her in your own creation. 2 sessions.
Sign Language Hands
Students will make contour drawings of their hands forming the sign language letters of their initials. Then, the hands are cut out and placed in a collage with the actual letters.
A Place of My Own
Students will learn how to draw a building interior using 2-point perspective. The building will become your own home, furnished just how you like it. 2 sessions.
