Elements of Art
Principles of Art
Observation & description using art vocabulary
Emphasis on increased choice and representation of self
Metaphorically Speaking
Students will explore metaphors as written word and as expressions in art. Lesson includes reading and discussion of the book “Black Cat” by Chris Myers. Students will create an artwork that expresses a visual metaphor. 1 session.
Discovering Modern Art
Students will research a modern artist using a variety of resources, then create a poster about the artist and his/her work. Students will create their own artwork in a style similar to their artist. 3 sessions.
Rocky Landscape
Students will review the rock cycle, and types of rocks and minerals, then create a landscape painting showing a prominent rock formation from above and below the earth’s surface.
1 session.

Cultural Mask-Making
Students will create a paper mache mask reflecting an ancient culture (China, Egypt, Mexico). We’ll look at examples from a variety of cultures and discuss their purposes. 3 sessions.
"Day of the Dead" Self Portrait
After learning correct body proportions and reviewing the human skeleton, students draw a fun “dead” portrait. We’ll discuss the significance of “Dias de los Muertos” in Mexican culture as we decide how we’d like to be remembered. 2 sessions.
Sand Painting
Students will create a composition using colored sand that is adhered to a sticky paper surface. They can experiment with color mixing and design along with getting to learn the safe cutting techniques using an exacto knife. 3 sessions.
Block Printing
This class will begin with a little history about printing technology and how it affected different civilizations. Then, using a soft rubber plate, students use the traditional tools of the linoleum block cut to design their own printing plate. Students will print a set of greeting cards for their personal use. 3 sessions.
Art from Ancient Cultures
Students will get to create are representing 4 different ancient cultures. Projects may include a clay scupture from Mesopotamia, an Egyptian wall painting, a Greek-style scratchboard drawing, and a painting using Aztec symbols. 4 sessions.
Environmental Art
Students look at artists who create in the outdoor environment including Dale Chihuly and Christo. As a class, they’ll create an outdoor work for public viewing. There are a number of options for materials and scope of the project. Contact me for details.
